A patent, Inkjet printing of pearlescent and metallic colours, published Jan. 8, 2019 used the CPS Disc Centrifuge to help resolve hurdles faced in the inkjet printing industry. Previously, there were certain challenges with printing metallic or pearlescent inks with an inkjet printer:
Inkjet printing provides greater variability and reliability than older methods. However, inks to be used in inkjet printing are limited by the size of the printing nozzle, and metallic and pearlescent inks previously used have a particle size too large for inkjet printers. Previous inks created to resolve this issue leave a grayish hue, and metallic inks require processing temperatures too high for most materials one might desire to print. Nano-particles, such as silver, are too expensive to print with.
The inventor of this patent was able to resolve these issues by printing a titanium dioxide layer (among other steps). According to the patent, the best procedure uses titanium dioxide particles of 150 nm, as measured by the CPS Disc Centrifuge 24000.
